Garden Update 6/4/18

This week involved a lot of projects at the Community Garden and not as much at home.  My sweet hubby had to replace some rotted boards and fix some stuff.  It has been a challenge to get time to do things here.  We are finishing up the homeschool year and it has just been busy.

Outside…

I have too many tomatoes and peppers to actually fit in the garden.  I think I am going to need to start looking for homes for a few plants.  But all the plants are finally outside.  No more plants under grow lights inside, which is a relief because I was getting really tired of having a plant nursery in the house.

Because of the craziness at the Community Garden taking all the time this week, I still haven’t planted my Mother’s Day flowers.  Maybe this week I can get it done.

The cilantro has grown enough to start using which was fortunate because this week we ran out of store bought cilantro right in the middle of making taco dinner.  We just needed a pinch and it was perfect.

Under the Grow Lights…

Nothing!!!  Yay!

This week…

Finish planting the flowers and fertilize plants.   Find someone who wants hot pepper plants.  Because I have far too many in my own garden.  I wonder if it is as hard to give away hot pepper plants as it is to pawn zucchini off on people at the end of the season.  I have never been in this situation before.

Harvest…

Just a little bit at home, and some more at the Community Garden.  We did harvest some awesome giant spinach from the Community Garden.  I love growing the giant spinach to use as mini tortilla and stuff with chicken salad.  It is by far my favorite way to eat spinach.  And also my favorite way to eat chicken salad.

Total Home Garden so far this year:

           ~ 1/4 oz. cilantro

           3 T. onion tops

           3/4 oz chives

~ 1/2 oz. chocolate mint (for tea)

1 T. Rosemary

Total Community Garden Beds this year:

13 1/2 ounces mixed Russian Red Kale and Spinach

~5 oz. mixed radishes – Champion, French Breakfast, and Sparkler Tip

Costs:

This month I paid $60 for three growing beds at the Community Garden.  I am using one and my kids wanted to grow things in the other two.  It is cool for them to be able to plant seeds and harvest the results.  It may, however be difficult to keep track of how much produce we get because once their gardens start producing, they begin snacking straight from the gardens.  Especially with snap peas.  They are like candy.  So I will just be measuring as best as I can.

*I have an extensive collection of seeds from prior years, seeds I saved from my own garden, and seeds that I am able to obtain for free every year at events hosted in our community and our community seed library, so my seed costs are pretty low.

Total:  $114.94 for the year

Enjoy your week and keep cool.  Protect yourself from the mosquitoes (they are crazy here right now) and the sun and go forth and grow!
