The last couple of weeks have been travel weeks, so I have been unable to update on what is going on around the garden. I have instead been checking out the natural beauty around me. Pretty much the only updates I have for this week are the harvest tallies. I managed to harvest a bit just before we left.
Outside…
The ocean is always so incredible to me. All that power and beauty. The tides going in and out, in and out, every single day without fail. The treasures that the waves toss up on the shores that surprise and delight us.
And almost nothing is as beautiful as a sunset on the beach. Especially if it also has people you love.
No garden pics this week. Hopefully by next week, there will be more to show.
This week…
I planted almost all of the flowers before I left and dropped off the ones I didn’t have time to plant at the church where hopefully, someone was able to make use of them. I was able to pawn a few hot pepper plants off at the church garden, where someone else was happy to take them off my hands. I also fertilizer spiked most of my tomatoes. With Jobe’s Organic Fertilizer Spikes. Hopefully that helps with the losing of the nitrogen to the trees.
I am at that season in gardening that almost always happens. At the beginning, I am so excited to see the miracle of the seeds sprouting and watching the tiny plants grow. By this time almost every year, I am so sick of nurturing the plants, that I am thrilled to get them in the ground and be done with that stage. Every year I tell my husband, “Next year I don’t want to start so many plants. Just a couple of tomatoes and be done with it.” He laughs at me, because he knows. But right now, that is how I am feeling. I am glad not to have to babysit them anymore. Now for just the fun part of getting the reward. And pulling a few weeds.
After we left town, we heard that there was a frost warning. Seriously. In June. You just can’t win. It looks like maybe the watermelons and peppers got a little cold, but I think that most everything else is ok.
Harvest…
I harvested some greens (kale, spinach, tatsoi, and baby bok choy) and radishes before we left from the church garden. I also donated a giant bunch of kale that I didn’t want to mess with and that was starting to go to seed to an elderly lady at the garden. I have not included that in this tally, as this is just what I am able to use for my own family here.
Total Home Garden so far this year:
~ 1/4 oz. cilantro
3 T. onion tops
3/4 oz chives
~ 1/2 oz. chocolate mint (for tea)
1 T. Rosemary
Total Community Garden Beds this year:
17 ounces mixed Russian Red Kale and Giant Spinach
~12 3/4 oz. mixed radishes – Champion, French Breakfast, and Sparkler Tip
1 1/8 oz. tatsoi
7 oz. baby bok choy
Total Pounds Harvested: 2 lbs. 7 3/8 oz (plus a few T. herbs)
Costs:
Nothing new to report this time.
*I have an extensive collection of seeds from prior years, seeds I saved from my own garden, and seeds that I am able to obtain for free every year at events hosted in our community and our community seed library, so my seed costs are pretty low.
Total: $114.94 for the year. So far that comes out to around $47 per pound of produce. I am basically looking at the $50 tomato this year. 😉 Let’s hope this number changes quickly as the summer harvest starts to come in.
Go forth and grow!
